Federal High Court Voids N110bn SUV and Allowance Plan for National Assembly

On May 6, 2026, the Federal High Court in Lagos declared the National Assembly’s N110bn scheme to buy SUVs and pay allowances to lawmakers unlawful. The judge found that spending N40bn on 465 vehicles and N70bn on support allowances violated procurement laws, the Constitution, and public trust. The court ruled there was no evidence of competitive bidding or value-for-money assessment. It described the allocation as arbitrary, disproportionate, and a conflict of interest since lawmakers approved their own benefits. Filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project in August 2023, the suit challenged the plan as self-dealing. The court dismissed claims about academic standing and ordered the Senate President and Speaker to ensure all future spending follows due process, transparency, accountability, and value for money.

Do you think this court ruling will really deter future lavish spending by our lawmakers, or will they find another loophole?

True, this ruling might shake them up a bit, but I'm betting they'll scout a new trick soon.

It's surprising that N70bn in allowances could bypass constitutional safeguards when procurement laws exist precisely to prevent this.

I'm not convinced that cancelling the scheme solves deeper budget mismanagement issues; accountability needs broader reforms beyond this single case.

Lawmakers and audit bodies should work together to establish transparent spending frameworks and regular public reporting on each vehicle acquisition.
