Woman Shocked to Find ₦406,000 Debt on Her New Prepaid Meter in Calabar
I visited the Calabar office of the electricity distribution company after I couldn’t buy tokens for my newly installed prepaid meter. To my surprise, they told me the meter was registered under the official who installed it and carries a debt of ₦406,000. I don’t know how my meter ended up in someone else’s name or how I’m supposed to inherit that huge bill. I asked if they could change the name on the account or give me a replacement, but they said there was nothing they could do. I’m considering petitioning the installer to clear the debt because it’s unfair to pay for a mistake I didn’t cause. Her story has sparked outrage online. Many Nigerians have shared similar experiences and are calling on the electricity distribution company to investigate and protect consumers.
