Nigerian Navy Apprehends Two Stowaways Off Lagos Coast

Nigerian Navy Apprehends Two Stowaways Off Lagos Coast — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Operatives aboard NNS BEECROFT arrested two men hidden in the rudder compartment of a foreign merchant vessel near the Lagos Fairway Buoy. The suspects, Abdullahi Yakubu, 36, and Omoniyi Afotona, 25, were taken into custody on March 19, 2026. Commander Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu of NNS BEECROFT reported that both men illegally boarded MV Seaspan Lahore at Apapa Port. He warned that stowing away is dangerous and urged families and community leaders to educate youth on the perils of irregular migration. The men were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service at Apapa. DSI Emmanuel Eneji confirmed they will be profiled, documented, and prosecuted. One suspect admitted to a previous failed attempt and said he lacked funds for legal passage to Spain. The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain under the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff and warned that repeat offenders will face stern action.

How did two men even manage to get into a rudder compartment and stay hidden until they reached the Lagos Fairway Buoy?

That's puzzling. Do we know what kind of access they had to get into that compartment undetected?

Do you think they snuck in before departure or hid themselves onboard while sailing?

This incident highlights serious gaps in shipboard inspections if two adults could linger in a rudder compartment unnoticed.

While some blame lax security, perhaps the crew simply overlooked routine checks during a busy voyage rather than any calculated scheme.

Shipping companies should implement random under-hull inspections and install motion sensors in concealed areas to prevent future stowaway attempts.
