Fagbemi Alleges Atiku’s OPL 245 Criticism Is Self-Serving

Fagbemi Alleges Atiku’s OPL 245 Criticism Is Self-Serving — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Lateef Fagbemi, Nigeria’s attorney-general and minister of justice, says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s objections to the OPL 245 settlement stem from “undisclosed and self-serving interests” rather than national duty. Fagbemi praised the March agreement with Eni and Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited as a major milestone after nearly 30 years of litigation. He noted it averted potential liabilities exceeding $2 billion at an international tribunal and followed rigorous judicial scrutiny in the US, UK and Italy. Atiku had labelled the deal “political theatrics” and warned that sidelining key stakeholders and pending court cases showed recklessness. Fagbemi countered that critics misrepresent the legally sound resolution and seek to frustrate benefits intended for over 200 million Nigerians. The AGF highlighted the block’s potential to add about 150,000 barrels per day, enhance government revenue and strengthen energy security. He urged citizens to reject hidden agendas and support the national interest.

Why is Atiku criticizing the OPL 245 deal now, after it was already agreed? Could there be politics behind his timing?

What recent development might have spurred Atiku to revisit that oil deal now?

He might genuinely spot issues now, not just politicking. Timing doesn't always mean self-serving motive.

Fagbemi's assertion frames Atiku's stance as self-serving interests over national duty, but it's unclear what undisclosed benefits he refers to.

We shouldn't dismiss Atiku's concerns outright. Settlement details often lack transparency, so calling him selfish seems premature.

A parliamentary review committee could audit the OPL 245 settlement terms. That step would clarify any hidden interests on all sides.
