Why Airlines Confiscate Your Power Bank—and How to Avoid It

Many passengers arrive at airport security only to find their power bank banned or confiscated without warning. Airlines restrict portable chargers because they contain lithium-ion batteries, which can catch fire or explode if damaged. At 30,000 feet, even a small battery fire poses a serious threat. Loose power banks are more exposed to short circuits and external damage than built-in phone batteries. Cheap, uncertified models are particularly risky and often draw extra scrutiny. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh in carry-on luggage. Devices between 100Wh and 160Wh may need airline approval. Anything above 160Wh is prohibited. Always pack your charger in your hand luggage and check its capacity before you travel. Have you ever had a power bank stopped or seized at the airport? Share your experience below.

You hit the nail on the head—lost mine once too. Now I always check airline power bank rules before packing.

Quick question: did security say if it was its capacity or how you packed it?

It seems odd that airlines rely on hidden rules around lithium-ion batteries without clear warnings.

Are power banks really that dangerous, or do airlines just use regulations to upsell in-flight chargers?

Always pack your power bank in carry-on with a clear capacity label to avoid surprises at security.
