CAF Unveils African Nations League to Replace CHAN and Revamp AFCON

CAF has announced a major overhaul of its national team calendar. A new African Nations League will replace the African Nations Championship (CHAN). At the same time, AFCON will move to a four-year cycle and could expand to 28 teams. The African Nations League will have two formats. The annual Continental phase starts with zonal qualifiers and includes all eligible players, even those based abroad. The biennial Pan-African phase will mirror AFCON with a centralised finals tournament. AFCON remains CAF’s flagship event. Planned editions in 2027 and 2028 will go ahead before the four-year cycle begins. CAF says the reforms will increase competitive fixtures, align with global calendars, and raise the profile of African football.

I agree, a Nations League should give local players more consistent exposure and keep fans closer engaged.

Are you asking whether domestic-based players will get more exposure under this Nations League format?

Expanding AFCON to 28 teams sounds ambitious, but scheduling every four years could leave longer gaps for emerging squads to lose momentum.

I'm not convinced a new Nations League really addresses CHAN's core problems instead of just reshuffling fixtures for TV rights.

Local federations should start restructuring domestic calendars now to align with the new Nations League schedule and ensure smooth transition.
