Lagos Urges Stronger Climate Finance at Berlin Forum to Shield Coastal Cities
The Lagos State Government has appealed to developed nations and global financiers to turn climate funding pledges into action. At the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources highlighted the urgent need for support to help vulnerable coastal cities confront rising sea levels. He stressed that developing countries, which contribute little to global emissions, carry the heaviest burden of climate impacts. The commissioner called for practical partnerships, localized finance, technology transfer and direct collaboration with frontline cities. He warned that policy declarations alone are insufficient without investments in resilient infrastructure, flood modelling and coastal engineering. He urged global institutions to provide advanced tools and expertise essential for adaptation and long-term resilience. But Lagos cannot tackle these challenges alone. Sustained cooperation and financial backing are vital to safeguarding lives, livelihoods and economic assets in rapidly urbanizing coastal regions.
