Nearly 50 Die of Thirst After Lorry Breaks Down in Sahara
At least 49 people travelling from Mali to Niger died of dehydration when their lorry broke down more than 80 km west of the Assamaka border crossing. Only two survivors managed to walk to Assamaka and raise the alarm. Officials in Niger’s Agadez region said scorching temperatures and the absence of water sources made survival impossible. Dozens of bodies were found under and around the immobilised truck and buried in nearby mass graves. During the same rescue operation, teams discovered another stranded lorry carrying over 60 passengers. Security personnel provided water and helped repair the vehicle so the travellers could continue safely. Authorities warn that many young people risk dangerous cross-desert journeys in search of better opportunities across West Africa.
