RSU Commits to Upgrading Digital Library Infrastructure
On Wednesday, 15 April 2026, Rivers State University hosted its 129th inaugural lecture. The Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, was the special guest. The lecture, “From Print to Pixel: Digitalizing Library and Information Services in a Knowledge-Based Economy,” was delivered by former University Librarian Prof. Jennifer Ngozi Igwela. In his opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi noted that we have entered a digital era. He challenged academics and stakeholders to rethink how libraries can stay relevant in a tech-driven world. Prof. Igwela highlighted the limits of print-only libraries and the urgent need for digital systems. She pointed to technologies such as AI, machine learning, blockchain and augmented reality to improve information retrieval and user experience. She also stressed that modern librarians must develop digital skills, warning that equipment without trained personnel is meaningless. In closing, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed RSU’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure and aligning with global best practices. He urged government and stakeholders to invest in library development. Other dignitaries included former vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors and senior university officers.
