How CONUA’s Uninterrupted Academic Calendar Push Has Stabilised Nigerian Universities
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) says its advocacy for continuous academic sessions has bolstered stability in Nigeria’s university system since its recognition in 2023. In Abuja, CONUA President Prof. Niyi Sumonu highlighted efforts to foster industrial harmony, secure a draft agreement on improved staff welfare, and enrich policy discussions through union pluralism. He warned that ongoing brain drain shows persistent challenges and urged the government to treat education as an investment by boosting funding, remuneration, and research facilities to retain talent. Sumonu also called for specialised institutions, stronger industry partnerships, and transparent collaboration among government, administrators, staff, students, parents, and industry to maintain an uninterrupted academic calendar and enhance global competitiveness.
