Engineers Urged to Embrace Entrepreneurship to Drive Nigeria’s Growth
Stakeholders in the engineering sector have called on Nigerian engineers to adopt entrepreneurship and innovation as engines for socio-economic development. The appeal was made at the maiden public lecture and induction dinner of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ibeju-Lekki Branch, held in honour of the local government chairman. Dr Olufummilade Akingbagbohun highlighted Nigeria’s infrastructure deficits, rising unemployment and limited industrialisation. She urged engineers to turn these challenges into business opportunities and to align with global trends in electric vehicles, compressed natural gas and hybrid systems. Representing the NSE president, Ayotunde Ogunnoiki called for supportive government policies and for corporate organisations to prioritise indigenous engineering firms. He stressed that engineers must build a resilient economy through local content and job creation. Keynote speaker Mr Abdullahi Olowa emphasised integrating entrepreneurship into engineering education. The event also saw the induction of 25 new members and the presentation of a N1.5 million scholarship to a doctoral student.
