Awka Residents Petition IGP Over Police Interference in Long-Running Land Dispute
Concerned residents of Awka have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, alleging arbitrary arrests and undue police involvement in a decades-old land dispute between Obuagu Awka and Umuomamu Ifite Nibo communities. The petition notes that both the High Court in Awka and the Court of Appeal in Enugu ruled in favor of Obuagu Awka. Yet police officers, reportedly acting on orders from a Deputy Commissioner, have arrested Chief Kenneth Afamefuna Ezekwesili and others, charging them with “conduct likely to cause communal war.” One arrest in February 2026 also involved a ₦300,000 bail demand. The group is urging the IGP to investigate the officers’ conduct, reaffirm police neutrality in civil disputes, halt any further arrests tied to the case, and ensure court decisions are respected to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
