SWDC to Launch ₦80bn ‘TransComs’ Programme to Transform 137 Rural Communities
The Southwest Development Commission will host a two-day summit in Ibadan from May 5 to May 6 to unveil the ₦80 billion Transformed Communities Programme (TransComs). The event will bring together policymakers, development finance institutions and private sector leaders at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. TransComs aims to boost rural livelihoods and create 137 self-sustaining community economies across the six Southwest states. Under the model, clusters of three to five neighbouring villages will operate across seven pillars: agriculture, agro-processing, energy, digital connectivity, healthcare, microfinance and social protection. Two pilot communities—Fapote and Ibapara—have already been selected. Summit discussions will focus on implementation strategies, funding structures and operational frameworks. A joint work plan for Ogbomoso will also be announced. Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi, SWDC Chairman, described the programme as the most ambitious effort in a generation to organise rural productive potential. He said TransComs will address infrastructure gaps such as storage, electricity, processing capacity, healthcare services and access to finance.
