Democracy in Peril Without Independent Courts and Security, COOU Honors Simon Okeke
The Faculty of Law at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University held a ceremony in Awka to present its Excellence Award to Chief Dr Simon Nsobundu Okeke. The event celebrated his decades of public service and groundbreaking reforms in the Nigerian Police Service. Academics, legal luminaries and government officials attended, including the Vice-Chancellor Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha and the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebe. Their presence underscored the link between legal education and public accountability. During his tenure as pioneer Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Okeke introduced institutional oversight, improved recruitment standards and championed civil accountability. Speakers praised his integrity and commitment to justice. In his keynote, Okeke warned that democracy could falter if courts and security agencies fail to act independently and with professional integrity. He urged members of the legal and security community to uphold their constitutional roles.
