Chinese and Nigerian Miners Arrested in Nasarawa Illegal Mining Raid

Chinese and Nigerian Miners Arrested in Nasarawa Illegal Mining Raid

During a security operation on July 17 in Amba Community, Kokona LGA, Deputy Governor Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe led a raid that resulted in the arrest of three Chinese nationals and several Nigerian artisanal miners. Authorities seized mineral resources packed in cartons, CCTV cameras, and other equipment used to carry out unauthorised mining. Akabe explained that he personally supervised the exercise after reports that mining continued despite a state order suspending all operations. He raised concerns about how foreigners without proper documentation operated the site and stressed that the government would enforce the law and protect host communities. The deputy governor noted that mining falls under federal jurisdiction but affirmed Nasarawa State’s commitment to community welfare and environmental checks. He warned that all culpable individuals would face prosecution and urged residents to support the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security. Investigations continue into the employers based in Abuja who allegedly directed the operation.

What impact do you think these arrests will have on local communities and the broader fight against illegal mining?

I agree, these arrests could curb illegal pits, yet might drive miners underground, leaving communities worse off and enforcement playing catch-up.

They mentioned minerals packed in cartons and CCTV cameras, but there's no detail on how authorities uncovered the operation.

It's understandable to enforce regulations, yet we shouldn't overlook the livelihoods of artisanal miners who depend on daily earnings.

Authorities could engage community leaders to develop monitoring programs and provide training on compliant mining methods.
