Ebola Outbreak Forces DR Congo to Cancel Kinshasa World Cup Send-Off
The DR Congo team has called off its three-day World Cup training camp and farewell event in Kinshasa. The decision follows a Bundibugyo strain Ebola outbreak in the east that has claimed over 130 lives and raised WHO alarm. Only the Kinshasa stage was cancelled. The squad will still play warm-up friendlies against Denmark in Liège on June 3 and Chile in Spain on June 9. Players and coach Sébastien Desabre remain based abroad, with many squad members plying their trade in France. FIFA is monitoring the situation and working with the Congolese federation on medical and security advice. DR Congo, making its first World Cup appearance since 1974, opens against Portugal in Houston on June 17, before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K.
