Court Replays El-Rufai’s Arise TV Interview as NSA Phone-Tapping Trial Resumes

Court Replays El-Rufai’s Arise TV Interview as NSA Phone-Tapping Trial Resumes

The Federal High Court in Abuja replayed an Arise Television programme featuring former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai during human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju’s testimony in the alleged phone-tapping case. Adeyanju told Justice Abdulmalik that the recording matched what he heard on February 13. He said El-Rufai claimed someone intercepted conversations involving the National Security Adviser and passed the information to him. The prosecution admitted the TV interview, a subpoena and a flash drive recording as exhibits without objection. Adeyanju also referenced reports of an ICPC probe into alleged corruption by the former governor. Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the trial to June 23. El-Rufai, who pleaded not guilty to the five-count charge, was granted bail in the sum of ₦100 million.

How do we think the court's replay of that Arise TV interview changes public perception of El-Rufai's alleged phone-tapping involvement?

Which angle of the replay do you reckon will sway opinions most: his expressions or his statements?

It's interesting that the recording was presented without any independent verification of its authenticity or the full context around that conversation.

I'm not convinced this case hinges solely on a television clip; the court must have other evidence beyond a single broadcast replay.

A formal request for forensic audio experts could help confirm if the replayed recording matches original tapes and clarify the chain of custody.
