LASUED Lecturer Calls for Comprehensive Overhaul of Early Childhood Education in Nigeria
A lecturer at Lagos State University of Education has released a policy brief calling for sweeping reforms in early childhood education nationwide. The study finds that improving caregiver training alone cannot guarantee quality outcomes. It highlights the need for better caregiver welfare, supportive leadership, manageable workloads and improved infrastructure. The research involved 868 caregivers from 62 public pre-primary schools across five education authorities. It draws on Social Cognitive Learning Theory and Herzberg’s motivation principles to show how motivation, organisational support and job design shape teaching practices. Key recommendations include practice-based professional development, mandatory annual CPD, better pay and welfare for caregivers, clear career paths and leadership training for school administrators. The brief also calls for dedicated bodies to oversee early childhood governance, quality assurance and research-driven policy across states. The lecturer urges collaboration among government, school owners, professional associations and communities to build an equitable, inclusive and high-quality early learning system. Investing in caregivers today will shape Nigeria’s human capital and economic future.
