At 28, Kainene applied to over 120 NHS roles before landing a job in England. She spent 18 months securing her licence, gathering documents and paying fees to make the move. Arriving in mid-2023 brought cold weather, transport surprises and subtle racism from patients. She quickly learned that adulting abroad means paying rent, mastering bus schedules and adapting to new social norms. Now settled at work, she’s grown more confident in the system and built a small circle of Nigerian friends. Yet she still misses home and rates her happiness at 6.6 out of 10. Between driving lessons, pub culture and a ride at Hull Fair, her UK life has highs and lows. For her, the real enjoyment is still on the horizon.
