INEC, DSS Investigate FCT Minister’s Aide Over Leak of Emeka Ike’s Voter Record

INEC, DSS Investigate FCT Minister’s Aide Over Leak of Emeka Ike’s Voter Record

INEC and the Department of State Services have launched a joint probe into alleged unauthorized access to the Continuous Voter Registration database. This follows the online release of Nollywood actor Emeka Ike’s registration details by Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister. INEC’s Mohammed Kudu Haruna explained that audit logs point to valid credentials assigned to registration officers. Investigators have identified the user account involved and interviewed all relevant personnel. Preliminary findings indicate there was no external hack or system breach. Instead, the incident appears to stem from misuse of legitimate access. Both agencies are reviewing technical, administrative, and operational factors to determine individual responsibility. The commission urges the public to disregard speculation as investigations continue. INEC and DSS promise to share final results in due course and will take legal action against anyone found culpable.

The timing of DSS involvement after a simple online leak report raises doubts about motives behind this investigation.

I'm not convinced this case is only about data breach. Politicians might be using this for a smear campaign.

INEC should tighten system access controls and audit logs immediately to prevent future leaks from unauthorized aides.
