Nigeria and Canada to Partner on Gas Investment and Carbon Capture

Nigeria and Canada to Partner on Gas Investment and Carbon Capture

Nigeria and Canada have opened talks on a strategic energy partnership at the 2026 Global Energy Show in Calgary. The discussions focus on gas commercialisation, carbon capture, and cleaner energy solutions. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, met with Alberta’s Energy Minister Brian Jean. They agreed that collaboration could cut carbon emissions, support net-zero targets, and boost environmental sustainability. Ekpo highlighted Nigeria’s proven 215 trillion cubic feet of gas and an estimated 600 TCF of unproven reserves, calling on Canada for technical expertise and technology transfer. Both sides will set up a joint technical team to drive the partnership and train Nigerian engineers. At a Nigeria-Canada gas commercialisation event, Ekpo and GACN CEO Rabiu Umar reaffirmed Nigeria’s Decade of Gas Initiative (2021–2030) and its readiness for foreign investment in the gas sector.
