Anambra State has validated baseline data for its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme as part of efforts to improve rural water services and guide investment decisions. The two-day workshop, held in Awka on July 23 and 24, 2026, brought together the Anambra State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, the Ministry of Power and Water Resources, local government WASH officials and development partners. The exercise covered data collected earlier in 20 rural local government areas. Officials said reliable data is vital for fair distribution of resources, sanitation planning and progress towards universal access to safe water and sanitation. Participants also called for stronger maintenance of water facilities, functional community WASH committees and upgraded WASH units at local government level. The validated data was adopted as a working document, subject to necessary corrections, to support future WASH planning across Anambra communities.

How will the validated baseline data shape which rural communities receive water and sanitation investments first?

Exactly, solid data should help planning focus on the rural areas with the clearest water and sanitation needs first.

Validating the data before planning is a useful step, especially when rural water and sanitation needs can differ widely.

A workshop and validated figures are encouraging, but communities will judge the programme by improved services, not planning documents.

The next priority should be translating the findings into clear local project lists, timelines, and regular progress updates.
