US Issues 'Do Not Travel' Warning for Multiple Nigerian States
The US Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria and urged US citizens to reconsider traveling due to growing security risks. It authorised non-emergency personnel and families to depart the US Embassy in Abuja over concerns about crime, terrorism and civil unrest. Violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage-taking and rape are common. Kidnapping gangs often block interstate roads and target foreigners and dual nationals. Terrorists and local criminal groups continue to carry out attacks in public places with little or no warning. Several states including Borno, Yobe, Kogi, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, Plateau and Taraba are under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning. Other regions face high risks of unrest, communal violence and violent protests. The advisory also highlights unreliable healthcare, counterfeit medicines and limited emergency services. Americans are urged to secure comprehensive medical evacuation coverage before visiting Nigeria.
