Healthcare Unions Protest Proposed ‘Power Grab’ Bill in Abuja
Tension is rising as members of the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations marched in Abuja. They oppose the Health Sector Executive Bills 2026, which would place all healthcare professions under the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Protesters warn this change threatens the multi-professional structure of Nigeria’s health system. They say it could undermine autonomy, create inequality among roles, harm teamwork and ultimately reduce patient care quality. Demonstrators plan to take their concerns to the National Assembly if the bill moves forward. Experts fear the proposal may deepen divisions instead of tackling issues like poor funding, brain drain and decaying infrastructure. The bigger question now is whether this reform will improve healthcare delivery or simply shift power within the system.
