Kano to Screen 3,000 Couples Before State-Sponsored Mass Wedding
The Kano State Hisbah Board will begin mandatory health screenings for 3,000 engaged couples from June 8. The exercise, held across 24 local government areas, will test for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use and other STIs. In collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, the board’s Deputy Commander General said only couples who pass all tests will join the mass wedding. Participants must report to their local Hisbah offices or risk removal from the programme. The mass wedding initiative was reintroduced by the state government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. It aims to ease marriage costs and curb social challenges like prostitution among vulnerable young women.
