FIFA Unveils 2026 World Cup Rule Overhauls to Speed Up Play
FIFA has confirmed a series of rule changes for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The goal is to keep matches flowing and reduce time-wasting. Substituted players will now have just 10 seconds to leave the pitch. Any delay means their replacement must wait one minute off-field, leaving the team temporarily down to ten men. A new 5-second clock will apply to throw-ins and goal kicks. Exceeding the limit hands possession to the opposition. Players receiving medical treatment must exit the field and can only return after one minute, unless they were fouled and the offending player received a card. VAR will also review incorrectly awarded corner kicks. Only team captains may approach referees for explanations, or risk a yellow card if others surround the official.
