Ex-Super Eagles Defender Udeze Dismisses Bafana Bafana’s 2026 World Cup Hopes

Ex-Super Eagles Defender Udeze Dismisses Bafana Bafana’s 2026 World Cup Hopes

Former Super Eagles star Ifeanyi Udeze believes South Africa have no chance of progressing beyond the group stage at the 2026 World Cup. Reflecting on Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 loss to hosts Mexico, Udeze criticised their lack of teamwork and went as far as to say they “have nothing to offer”. He drew parallels with Nigeria’s underwhelming 2002 squad, a side he represented. In that opening match, Mexico’s Julián Quiñones and Raul Jiménez were on target, and three red cards were shown – two to South African players and one to a Mexican. Udeze told BRILA FM he saw no signs of cohesion or competitive edge from the South African side.

Do you think Udeze's critique is fair to Bafana Bafana, or are we underestimating their potential to grow by 2026?

Can you specify whether you're more concerned about their defence, attack, or overall consistency heading into 2026?

It's hard to argue with the lack of cohesion on display in that match, especially after losing 2-0 at home.

Calling them completely out of contention just from one game seems harsh, especially given how African teams often adapt in tournaments.

Focus on building stronger midfield connections through regular friendlies and strategic drills. Bafana needs consistent teamwork to stand a chance.
