Nigerian Army and Red Cross Renew Collaboration to Protect Civilians

Nigerian Army and Red Cross Renew Collaboration to Protect Civilians

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to human rights and full adherence to International Humanitarian Law in all operations. He made this pledge while welcoming the head of the Red Cross delegation in Abuja. Shaibu said respect for human rights, the protection of civilians and strong civil–military relations are essential to boosting operational effectiveness and public confidence. He recognized the Red Cross as a trusted strategic partner that has strengthened humanitarian efforts and stability in conflict-affected areas. He noted that IHL and human rights principles are now fully integrated into training programmes. He highlighted steps such as the Civilian Harm Mitigation Plan, improved detention management and facilitated humanitarian access. The Army will continue working with relief organisations to safeguard vulnerable communities.
