Cybercrime Unit Officer at Zone 7 Allegedly Extorts ₦5M, Defies IGP’s Free Bail Order

Cybercrime Unit Officer at Zone 7 Allegedly Extorts ₦5M, Defies IGP’s Free Bail Order

In Abuja’s Zone 7 Cybercrime Unit, an officer is accused of demanding millions in cash and property from suspects before granting bail. This violates the IGP’s directive that bail is free and Section 35 of the Police Act 2020. In one case, two men were arrested with a luxury vehicle but released only after one was told to sell the car and return with ₦5 million for his friend’s freedom. Similar patterns earlier this year reportedly forced victims to pay as much as ₦1.8 million. Civil society groups are urging the IGP and the Police Service Commission to investigate swiftly, sanction any officer found guilty, and publish the outcomes. They remind citizens that bail is free and encourage reporting extortion to the official complaints units.

What can ordinary citizens do to ensure the IGP's free bail order is actually enforced by Zone 7 officers?

Which oversight office should citizens contact to confirm Zone 7 duly released the officer on free bail?

I'm not sure regular folks have much clout here. Maybe report to oversight bodies, but will that change anything?

It's troubling to see an officer openly defy Section 35 of the Police Act despite clear bail regulations.

I doubt this is just an isolated case, corruption in the cybercrime unit could be more entrenched than reported.

Document every demand for payment when seeking bail and submit evidence to the police complaints board immediately.
