Amotekun Is Nigeria’s De Facto State Police, Retired General Insists
Retired Major General Ishola Williams says Nigeria already has state police in practice through regional security outfits like Amotekun. He argues the real gap lies in the lack of constitutional backing to regulate and formalise these forces. Speaking on a current affairs programme, Williams criticised policy inconsistency and poor coordination among security agencies. He warned that overlapping mandates and centralised elite units undermine effective crime fighting and worsen the nation’s insecurity. He called on the National Assembly to amend the Constitution, improve intelligence coordination, and empower state-led security forces. Williams also urged faster deployment of specialised units and air assets during kidnappings, stressing that institutional reform—not new structures—will strengthen Nigeria’s security.
