Federal and state officials launched a two-week operation across 45 states to target historic healthcare fraud. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche called it the largest combined effort in history, leading to 455 arrests and $6.5 billion in false billing schemes. Investigators revealed a Texas nurse billed Medicare $1 million per patient for unnecessary grafts. In Las Vegas, a practitioner allegedly claimed $906 million, spending ill-gotten gains on luxury cars, jewelry and a Philippine resort. Three Florida nurses and a medical sales executive were also charged in multimillion-dollar tissue graft and kickback schemes. Additional cases include an Illinois provider accused of billing $92 million for impossible counseling hours, a Texas doctor whose bogus cardiac tests preceded a student athlete’s death, and a Florida man indicted for a $3.76 billion medical supply fraud. Authorities seized luxury vehicles, cash, real estate and life insurance policies as part of the crackdown.
