Rare 11,000-Carat Ruby Found Amid Conflict in Myanmar’s Gem Region
Miners in Myanmar’s Mogok region have uncovered a rare five-pound ruby weighing 11,000 carats. State-run media says the gem was discovered just after the April New Year festival and later displayed at the presidential office in Naypyidaw. Though only half the size of the country’s largest recorded ruby (21,450 carats), this stone is valued higher for its vivid color, high transparency and reflective surface. Myanmar supplies about 90% of the world’s rubies, with Mogok at the heart of that industry. Human rights groups have long urged jewelers to avoid Myanmar-sourced gems, warning that gemstone revenues bankroll the military and contribute to ongoing conflicts since the 2021 coup.
