Wike: Atiku Rejected South’s Bid to Complete Its Tenure in Power-Sharing Talks

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has shed light on recent discussions about zoning and power rotation ahead of Nigeria’s next elections. He recalled telling former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to let the South finish its agreed tenure, only for Atiku to respond, "No, we can’t do that." Wike raised this point while discussing the principle of rotating key party positions between Nigeria’s regions. Wike argued that informal agreements on power sharing have long kept parties united and balanced. He warned that ignoring these understandings can spark tensions among stakeholders. According to him, fair representation and respect for zoning arrangements are vital for national unity and stability.

Perhaps setting up an independent commission to oversee zoning agreements would help ensure transparency and prevent future disagreements.
