Survey: Almost 80% of Nigerians Say Country Is on the Wrong Track Ahead of 2027 Election
A new SBM Intelligence survey shows nearly 80% of Nigerians believe the country is moving in the wrong direction ahead of the 2027 polls. The poll covered 829 eligible voters in eight states and the Federal Capital Territory in late May 2026. Dissatisfaction runs high across all six geopolitical zones. The South-East recorded the highest negative score at 92%, followed by the South-South and North-Central above 88%. Even the South-West and North-East had majorities expressing concern at over 60%. Insecurity topped voters’ worries, with 45% citing it as their main concern and a further 34% pointing to combined economic hardship and security issues. President Tinubu’s administration scored a net favourability of –58.5, with no region rating performance above the midpoint on key issues like inflation, jobs, and electricity. The survey also reveals strong turnout intentions in the South-East (87.4%), South-South (82.9%), and North-West (82.4%). It flags growing anxiety about AI-driven misinformation as social media becomes the primary news source for many Nigerians.
