FG Insists No New BEA Scholarships in 2026 Budget

FG Insists No New BEA Scholarships in 2026 Budget

The Federal Government has clarified the status of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship. It insists no new foreign awards are planned despite the programme’s appearance in the 2026 budget. Minister Tunji Alausa explains that the BEA allocation in the upcoming budget is a carry-over from the 2025 budget. Under Nigeria’s budgeting system, approved items cannot be removed retroactively. About 30 percent of last year’s allocations are rolled over, while 70 percent move into new projects. The minister stressed this normal budget process does not mean fresh scholarship awards have resumed. He also assured that current scholarship beneficiaries will continue to receive full support. He urged the public to ignore misleading interpretations of budget figures in recent online reports.

What do you think motivated the government to keep the BEA scholarship line in the 2026 budget if they won't award any new slots?

It's odd that the budget still lists BEA scholarship funds despite the minister's claim there will be no foreign awards.

I'm not convinced this is merely a clerical oversight; perhaps the minister's explanation covers up deeper funding shifts we haven't seen.

Students relying on these scholarships should explore alternative funding options now to avoid unexpected gaps in their plans.
