Three Years of Tinubu’s Power Reforms Leave Nigerians in the Dark
When President Bola Tinubu took office, he vowed to fix Nigeria’s electricity sector or lose voters’ support. Three years on, power supply remains erratic despite new laws and billions spent. The 2023 Electricity Act was meant to end DisCo monopolies and let states generate and distribute power. Yet only 15 states have adopted it and disputes over tariffs continue. A N700 billion Meter Initiative has not delivered a single meter, leaving over six million customers unmetered. Frequent grid collapses, vandalism and mounting debts have compounded the crisis. Experts say weak governance, overlapping agencies and delayed payments to gen-cos and gas suppliers must be addressed. Without decisive reforms and enforcement, reliable electricity will remain out of reach.
