Oil Spill and Tidal Surges Devastate Abereke in Ondo, CAPPA Demands Urgent Action
Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa visited Abereke in Ilaje LGA, Ondo State and found a community under siege. Repeated oil spills from an indigenous operator and worsening coastal erosion have contaminated water bodies and destroyed fishing tools. Residents face loss of income, dying livestock and costly access to clean water. Tidal surges have submerged homes, collapsed the only primary school and left villagers without health facilities. CAPPA’s Associate Director, Martins Ogunlade, called the situation “a preventable disaster” fueled by corporate negligence and government inaction. Despite several letters to authorities, there has been little response. CAPPA is calling for a full environmental impact assessment, immediate site clean-up, coastal protection works and compensation for affected families. The group also demands reconstruction of schools and restoration of livelihoods. They pledge to amplify Abereke’s voice until polluters and officials are held accountable.
