Four Igbo Women Who Broke the Glass Ceiling at the World Bank

Four Igbo Women Who Broke the Glass Ceiling at the World Bank

Nigeria has produced four extraordinary Igbo women who have reached the vice presidency at the World Bank Group. Their achievements mark a historic milestone in global finance and diplomacy. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala rose from development economist to Managing Director, overseeing an $81 billion portfolio. She later erased $30 billion of Nigeria’s debt and now leads the WTO. Dr. Oby Ezekwesili served as Vice President for the Africa Region, managing over $40 billion in projects across 48 countries. She helped drive Nigeria’s early-2000s economic reforms and co-founded Transparency International. Arunma Oteh led the bank’s $200 billion debt portfolio as Vice President and Treasurer. Before that, she reformed Nigeria’s capital markets as SEC Director-General. Sandie Okoro became Senior Vice President and General Counsel, guiding legal policy for the entire institution. Honoured with an OBE, she now serves as University of Birmingham Chancellor. Their stories inspire a new generation of leaders in finance, law and international development.

This achievement is impressive, but I wonder if it reflects true systemic change or simply a few high-profile appointments.

I'm glad for their success, yet doesn't it feel like the World Bank still overlooks many qualified professionals from underrepresented communities?
