Court Hears $6.23bn CBN Funds Allegedly Used to Pay Foreign Election Observers
On April 27, 2026, prosecution witness Chinedu Eneanya told an FCT High Court in Abuja that $6.23 billion was siphoned from CBN coffers under the guise of funding foreign observers for the 2023 election. Eneanya, the 13th prosecution witness in the EFCC’s trial of former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, said investigators recovered memos authorising the transfers. Forensic analysis showed signatures of former President Buhari and ex-SGF Boss Mustapha were forged. Under cross-examination, Eneanya added that five CBN officials who signed the internal memo were suspended over the transaction. Defence counsel applied to close the prosecution case if remaining witnesses failed to appear, citing delays. The judge adjourned the trial until April 28, 2026, and ordered the issuance of subpoenas to secure the attendance of those witnesses.
