Abia, South-East States Discuss Rail Network Linking Port Harcourt, Aba and Enugu

Governor Alex Otti says Abia, other South-east states and parts of the South-south are discussing a regional railway network to improve transport links and economic integration. The proposed network could connect Port Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, Imo and Akwa Ibom. Otti said Abia had previously commissioned a Chinese firm to design a light-rail system within the state, but the plan was paused after officials concluded that a wider regional network would be more viable. He added that the proposed project could be integrated with the existing Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail corridor, which passes through Aba. The governor also said Abia has acquired 20 additional electric buses and is planning housing estates in Umuahia and Aba.

Which corridor should be prioritised first if this regional rail plan moves forward: Port Harcourt to Aba, Aba to Enugu, or another link?

Port Harcourt to Aba seems the sensible starting point, then extend toward Enugu once the first phase is working well.

A shared network could make economic integration feel more practical, especially since the proposal spans South-east states and nearby South-south locations.

The regional ambition sounds promising, but discussion alone is not progress. Clear funding, timelines and coordination between the states will matter.

Starting with a phased route connecting major commercial centres could help test demand and build confidence before expanding across every proposed state.
