Kaduna North’s Road Works: Political Favoritism in Infrastructure Allocation
In Kaduna State, road construction and rehabilitation projects under the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs have focused heavily on Marafa Estate and Kabala. These areas are linked to the Commissioner’s political base. Yet larger, more electorally significant communities like Kwaru remain without a single major project. Population figures show Marafa and Kabala serve fewer than 30,000 residents and contribute under 5,000 votes, while Kwaru and other wards hold larger populations and delivered thousands of votes to the current administration. Despite this, Marafa and Kabala boast a dense road network. Kwaru’s exclusion reveals a pattern of deliberate marginalization rather than technical oversight. This distribution undermines equity and efficiency. Directing funds to low-impact areas reduces social return on investment. It also erodes trust in governance and risks voter apathy. Transparency measures, independent audits, and data-driven planning are needed to restore fair access to public goods.
