US Warns of ISIS Resurgence in West Africa and Lake Chad Basin

The US government warns that terrorist groups have shifted operations to parts of Africa, especially West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin. It says the collapse of ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria pushed remnants to ungoverned spaces in Africa and Central Asia. The US 2026 counterterrorism strategy names Nigeria and the Lake Chad region as critical fronts. It highlights growing threats from ISIS affiliates and Al Shabaab in the Sahel, Mozambique, Sudan, and Somalia. Washington will work with African governments to share intelligence and train local forces. The strategy also prioritises protecting Christians targeted by extremist groups while reducing direct US military deployments on the continent.
