Otti Proposes Regional Rail Network Linking South-East and South-South Cities

Otti Proposes Regional Rail Network Linking South-East and South-South Cities

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has outlined a proposal for an integrated regional rail network linking key South-East and South-South cities, including Port Harcourt, Aba, Umuahia, Enugu, Owerri and Uyo. The plan is intended to connect with the federal Port Harcourt–Maiduguri railway. The proposed network could reduce travel time, ease pressure on roads and lower the cost of moving people and goods. It could also help farmers, traders and manufacturers reach markets across Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta more efficiently. Supporters believe connected rail lines could encourage investment, create jobs around stations and strengthen economic cooperation across the old Eastern Region. However, the vision remains dependent on agreements among states, detailed planning, funding and delivery.

Which connection would make the biggest immediate difference: Port Harcourt to Aba, or the links toward Enugu, Owerri and Uyo?

Are we judging priority by expected passenger demand, freight movement, or the cost of getting each corridor running?

A regional network could make the South-East and South-South feel less disconnected, especially if the federal Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail link is properly integrated.

Absolutely, a connected regional rail system could make movement between these areas feel far less like a long-distance adventure.

The proposal sounds promising, but naming major cities is the easy part; coordination across states and the federal connection will matter just as much.

Starting with the busiest corridor and publishing clear phases could make the plan easier for residents to follow and assess over time.
