No Osimhen or Bassey: Okoye Returns as Super Eagles Take on Iran

No Osimhen or Bassey: Okoye Returns as Super Eagles Take on Iran

Nigeria face Iran in a friendly in Antalya as the Super Eagles continue their rebuilding under Éric Chelle. Maduka Okoye starts in goal for the first time since June 2025. Victor Osimhen sits out with injury and Calvin Bassey is absent on fitness grounds. The back four features Osayi-Samuel, Igoh Ogbu, Semi Ajayi and Bruno Onyemaechi. Wilfred Ndidi partners Alex Iwobi in midfield, while Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams lead the attack. This match is part of a four-nation invitational. After missing out on the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria aim to build on an unbeaten run in six games and a third-place finish at the last AFCON.

No doubt, Okoye's safe hands will fire up our attack to test Iran's backline.

It's odd that Chelle is risking team cohesion by shuffling the back line without his two key attackers available.

Sure, Okoye's return merits praise, but maybe we overstate his impact when the midfield still lacks creativity.

Emphasise defensive drills in training so Okoye and the reshaped back four can build understanding ahead of kickoff.
