US Launches ‘Freedom Cup’ Football Tournament in Lagos to Mark 250th Anniversary

US Launches ‘Freedom Cup’ Football Tournament in Lagos to Mark 250th Anniversary

As part of its 250th independence anniversary celebrations, the US Consulate General in Lagos organised a football tournament called the Freedom Cup on June 16, 2026, at Upbeat Recreational Centre, Lekki. The event brought together US government exchange alumni, students, journalists, Lagos State Government representatives and members of the US Mission. Team Truth (journalists) beat Team Opportunity 5-2 in the final, while Team Legacy secured third place. Winners received medals and trophies from US Consul General Rick Swart. Swart then joined participants in a friendly match between Team US and Team Lagos. He praised Lagos’s spirit and highlighted the power of sport diplomacy. He also noted Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup but celebrated Afrobeats stars opening the tournament and over 15 players of Nigerian heritage representing other nations. The Freedom Cup showcased friendly competition and strengthened cultural ties between Lagos and the United States.

This Freedom Cup fits perfectly for our Lagos sports vibe, I'm all in.

Interesting that the tournament mixed US exchange alumni with local and visiting students at Lekki's Upbeat Centre, though it might feel largely ceremonial.

I appreciate the idea, but I'm not convinced a one-day match at Upbeat Centre truly reflects the depth of US-Nigeria relations.

Consider organising follow-up coaching clinics with those US alumni and local players to make the Freedom Cup more than just a commemorative match.
