ICPC Jails NSCDC Deputy Commandant Over N4.55m Job-Racketeering Scam

ICPC Jails NSCDC Deputy Commandant Over N4.55m Job-Racketeering Scam

A former NSCDC Deputy Commandant, Idris Barde, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison or a N4 million fine by the FCT High Court in Abuja. He was convicted for accepting N4.55 million to secure jobs for seven individuals in the Corps. Barde, who served as Personal Assistant to the ex-Commandant General of the NSCDC, was prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on a two-count charge of job racketeering under the Corrupt Practices Act. During the trial, the ICPC presented documentary and testimonial evidence demonstrating his illicit activities. After evaluating the evidence, Justice Ngozika Nwabulu found him guilty and handed down the sentence. The ICPC described the conviction as proof of its commitment to holding public officers accountable and urged all officials and citizens to uphold integrity in public service.

It's surprising that taking N4.55 million only resulted in a one-year sentence or a N4 million fine.

Short jail stretch and almost N4m fine? E still heavy punishment, not exactly a free ride.

Focusing on this single conviction feels like token punishment while many racketeers keep operating unchecked.

NSCDC should publish clear recruitment guidelines and conduct regular audits to prevent future job-racketeering schemes.
