The National Emergency Management Agency has evacuated 1,516 Nigerians fleeing xenophobic violence in South Africa. The voluntary repatriation ran from June 11 to July 15 and saw evacuees arrive in seven batches at Lagos airport aboard Air Peace and South African Airways. Coordination involved several government bodies including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Federal Airports Authority. MTN and other partners also provided support for a safe and dignified return. NEMA led reception and onward transportation under the guidance of its Director General. The agency reaffirms its commitment to coordinated humanitarian response in future emergency evacuations.
