Ndume: Kaigame Tried to Rope Me into ₦5bn Boko Haram Ransom Demand

Ndume: Kaigame Tried to Rope Me into ₦5bn Boko Haram Ransom Demand

Senator Ali Ndume alleges that Samaila Kaigame pressed him to contribute ₦5 billion for a Boko Haram ransom after victims were abducted in Borno South. Kaigame, leader of the Borno South Youth Alliance, reportedly made repeated calls demanding payment. Ndume says he grew suspicious when the requests shifted from sharing information to asking for money. Instead of paying, he referred Kaigame to security agencies and stressed his firm opposition to any negotiations or ransom payments to Boko Haram. He also suggested the accusations may be politically motivated, recalling similar claims in 2011 when someone posing as a Boko Haram member contacted him. Ndume pointed out contradictions in a video released by Kaigame about his alleged ties with the group.

How does Ndume's claim change our view of political corruption and ransom schemes in Nigeria's northeastern region?

Absolutely, Ndume's allegation really shines a spotlight on how deep corruption and ransom demands might run up north.

It's unusual that someone so close to youth leadership would directly demand such a huge sum without clear evidence or witnesses.
