How Power and Greed Turned Our Primaries into Selections

How Power and Greed Turned Our Primaries into Selections

Party leaders have withheld the results of the May 29 NDC primary election, leaving voters in the dark. This secrecy betrays the ideals of transparency and accountability that underpin democracy. Incumbents almost never lose in Nigeria, no matter how badly they perform. What we call an election often functions as a selection by an elitist few. Political godfathers use this system to entrench their allies at the expense of ordinary citizens. Those negotiating in Abuja serve the interests of power brokers, not the electorate. Their loyalty lies with the parties’ unelected benefactors rather than with voters. True democracy depends on transparency and the rule of law. Until we reclaim these values, every public service will continue to suffer under the toxic brew of “Abuja Fever.”

It's no surprise incumbents rarely lose, but withholding election outcomes smacks of power abuse and erodes public trust.
