Blacklisted Supertanker Defies US Blockade by Sailing Through Strait of Hormuz with Tracker On, Iran Claims

Blacklisted Supertanker Defies US Blockade by Sailing Through Strait of Hormuz with Tracker On, Iran Claims

According to Iran’s consulate in Mumbai, a very large crude carrier (VLCC) blacklisted by the United States crossed the Strait of Hormuz with its tracking system active and reached Iranian ports without interference. The supertanker, capable of carrying up to two million barrels of oil, openly challenged US sanctions and threats. The US Central Command says it has fully implemented a blockade targeting all ships originating from Iranian ports and halted around 90 percent of Iran’s maritime trade within 36 hours. Yet maritime data from a tracking firm shows at least two other vessels also breached the blockade in the same period. Some observers accuse former President Trump of hypocrisy, pointing out that he withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal citing bias, while overlooking North Korea’s expanding weapon programme. They argue this double standard undermines US credibility on non-proliferation.

Could this VLCC passage really signal a shift in US enforcement effectiveness around Hormuz?

Yes, this incident might hint at new US resolve in Hormuz, though we'll need more cases to confirm real change.

Not sure this single passage proves stronger enforcement. Could just be testing limits rather than real policy change.

The fact that the supertanker kept its tracking system active seems designed to prove a political point more than logistics.

Not everyone buys the narrative that a single ship's journey alters the broader strategic balance in the region.

Ship operators should review risk protocols and insurance requirements when navigating sanctioned waters with public trackers enabled.
